Training

For all of you who took part in the first five sessions in early feb, your certificates are ready to collect in the Events Society office (in Headingley SU). Well done to everyone for passing the course and gaining a qualification!

We also now have this semester's remaining three training opportunities ready to roll out to our members!

All require payment up front to secure places, and all will be filled on a first-come first served basis.

We're in the Events Society office above the SU bar to take your payments and answer queries between 12 and 3 every day next week (8th - 12th inclusive). Email us at training@eventssociety.co.uk with any questions.

1) SPA Health and Safety Passport. Cost: £35 (normaly £85) Date: Thurs 18th March and Wed 24th March. 1 day course.

It is becoming industry standard to have an SPA Licence; festivals such as Glastonbury and Download now require you to have one to work onsite, so it gives you a huge advantage when applying for work at Live Events of all sizes!

  • The SPA Live Events passport is specific to the events industry,
  • Safety Passports are a very simple way for workers (including the self-employed) who move from one contract or company to another to show employers they have received basic training.
  • They reduce accidents and ill health at work.
  • Companies know that workers have been trained to a common, recognised and validated standard.
  • Insurance and liability premiums may be reduced if a company can show that all workers have basic health and safety training.

The course is a mixture of Power Point Presentation, spoken word and videos: Assessment tests will be included during the day.

On completion of the course you will recieve a durable SPA Licence which lasts for 3 years, after three years a 1 day refresher course is required.

2) Food Hygiene Certificate (Level 2). Cost- £25 (normally £35). 2 hours. 20 places on Wed 17th March + 20 on Thurs 25th March (times tbc)

A cheap and fast course which will be great for your CV!

Most events require the service or provision of food or drink in some form. As an event manager you will be bound to come into contact with catering, and it's a legal requirement that anyone who handles or distributes food and drink for the consumption of others to be qualified in Food Hygiene.

The course takes just 2 hours, is accredited by the CPD Certification Service and matches the syllabus used by both The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH / RIPH) and The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).

3) Security Industry Authority (S.I.A) Badge - £105 (normally £140). 2 day course: Dates and numbers tbc depending on interest.

The required license for all security staff and door supervisors..

To be allowed to simply stand on the doors of your event and determine suitability for entrance you need to be have this license!

You can also get lots of work during the summer and experience a range of events whilst doing it.

Course covers -

- The  role of the Door Supervisor
- Behavioural standards
- Customer service skills
- Health & Safety at work
- Civil & Criminal law
- Licencing Law
- Equal Opportunities
- Searching
- Eviction
- Offensive weapons
- Emergencies
- Drugs
- Arrest
- Record keeping

Once the training is completed the licence itself costs a further £245 for three years, this does not have to be purchased at the same time as the training, and trust us, it'll pay for itself in no time!

NOTE  Unlike the other courses, until we know how many people are interested in this course we are not confirming the dates or taking payments for it. If you're interested, please email training@eventssociety.co.uk to be added to the list, and we'll keep you in the loop.

Remember, part of the cost of most of these courses is being subsidised for you by the Society; you wont get them this cheap elsewhere!

Please direct any questions about these courses to our secretary Annie Metcalfe at training@eventssociety.co.uk
